Negation — saying "not"

First met in Lesson 01 as an answer; taught as a rule in Lesson 14.

The rule

Put no in front of what you are denying. It is the same no you already answer questions with. Nothing else changes.

Mi kula pan.I eat bread.
Mi no kula pan.I do not eat bread.
Mi no es doktor.I am not a doctor.
Dom no kabir. The house is not big.
Mi no sini.I am not here.

no goes immediately before the predicate — the verb, the adjective, the place word, or es.

With tense

no comes first, then the tense particle, then the verb. Negation covers the whole thing:

Mi no suda kula.I did not eat.
Yu no saufa lai.You will not come.
Dom no suda kabir. The house was not big.
Ta no saufa es doktor. She will not be a doctor.

Never suda no. The order is always no → tense → verb.

Answering is unchanged

no keeps its first job exactly as it was:

— Yu mau ca? — No.

— Yu mau ca? — No, mi no mau ca. Mi mau akua.

One word, two jobs, no new form for either.

Sources

no comes from the deepest and most widely shared negation on Earth — the root behind Spanish and Italian no, English no and not, Portuguese não, Latin non and ne, Russian ne, Polish nie, Serbian ne, Greek, Sanskrit na, Hindi and Urdu na and nahī̃, Bengali na, Persian na-, Nepali na. Well over three billion people already carry some form of it.

Using the answer word as the negator is what Spanish, Italian and Portuguese do: No. / No vengo. Nothing is borrowed that the language did not already have.

Why this and not the alternatives

Why not na. na is the same root and was the first candidate. It is a minimal pair with five settled words — no, ta, ya, ba, ca. The collision with no is the fatal one: a negator one sound away from the word for “no”, meaning almost the same thing, would be misheard constantly and the mistake would never be visible. The collision with ta is nearly as bad, since negation stands right beside pronouns.

Why reuse no instead of adding a word. It costs nothing, it is already in the founder’s first word list, and it is the same root every rejected candidate was reaching for. A language whose whole claim is “no exceptions” should not carry two words for one idea.

Why no before the tense particle. Negation is about the whole statement, not about the time. Putting it outermost means the rule can be stated once — no goes in front of what you deny — and never needs a second clause.

tidakIndonesianone family, and two syllables for the commonest word in any language

That row said three syllables until September 6, 2026. tidak has two by the rule this language counts by — one syllable per vowel group — and the overstatement was on the half of the reason that is a measurement rather than a judgement. The verdict does not move: one family is the other half, and it is why no was chosen. But a rejection is a record, and a record that overstates the cost of what it turned away is worth less than one that does not.

Open questions

  • Contrastive ellipsis — “X, not Y” — has no form. no goes before the predicate, and the predicate is a verb, an adjective, a place word or es. It never goes before a noun. Five sentences were writing X, no Y anyway, dropping the verb out of the second half the way English does:

    WhereWasNow
Lesson 19…korku dari animal kabir, no dari kucinga second clause, with its verb
Lesson 20Mi mau kamisa asul, no kamisa merahMi mau kamisa asul. Mi no mau kamisa merah.
Lesson 21Anahtar mi in kamra, no in bagetwo sentences
the phrasebookMi mau ini, no ituMi mau ini. Mi no mau itu.
    demonstratives.mdthe same sentencethe same

Every one of them is longer now, and a phrasebook line that a traveller actually says is longer than it needs to be. That is the argument for deciding this, and it is the founder’s to make: a rule that lets no stand in front of a repeated constituent would give all five back at no cost in words. Nothing here decides it.

A sixth sentence was a different fault and is simply fixed: Lesson 22 said No korku for “no fear”, which needs the existential — No es korku, there is no fear.

Found September 5, 2026. The last of them had been promoted into a rule page the day before, when Mi mau ini, no itu was cited on demonstratives.md as evidence that a demonstrative can be an object. It is evidence of that. Nobody had looked at its no.

  • Answering a negative question — settled: ya and no answer the fact, never the wording. Yu no mau ca? — No means I do not want it; Ya means I do. This is the English, Spanish, Hindi, Arabic, Turkish and Indonesian system, by far the majority. When it matters, answer with the verb: Mi mau / Mi no mau.

  • Nothing, nobody, never. Not yet designed. Whether they are built from no plus an existing word, or given their own roots, is open.
